The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said the low-lying areas in parts of Sylhet, Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions might experience short-term flooding over the next few days, as water levels in the country's major rivers continue to rise.

The FFWC in its latest flood bulletin on Sunday said the Kushiyara River was flowing 4.0 centimetres above the danger level at Fenchuganj station in Sylhet.

Besides, the Teesta at Dalia in Nilphamari, the Kushiyara at Markuli in Sunamganj, and the Someshwari at Kalmakanda in Netrokona were flowing close to their respective warning levels.

It further said the water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers had risen over the past 24 hours and were likely to continue increasing over the next three days.

The two rivers might cross the danger level at several points in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts within the next 72 hours, causing short-term flooding in the adjoining low-lying areas.

The FFWC also said the water levels in the Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers had increased over the past 24 hours and might continue rising over the next five days.

Between July 1 and July 3, the rivers might flow at the warning level in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur and Bogura districts, with the low-lying areas along the riverbanks likely to be inundated.

In northern region, the water levels in the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers remained stable during the past 24 hours, but were expected to rise over the next three days.

The rivers might cross the danger level within the next 48 hours, creating short-term flood in the low-lying areas of Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rangpur and Gaibandha districts.

The Bhugai-Kangsha and Someshwari rivers in Mymensingh region might also approach the warning level, temporarily inundating the low-lying areas in Sherpur, Mymensingh and Netrokona districts.

Meanwhile, the water level in the Ganges declined slightly over the past 24 hours, while that of the Padma continued to rise.
