Shahed Kamal, a veteran journalist, academic and son of renowned poet Sufia Kamal, died at Z H Sikder Hospital in the capital on Saturday evening.
His younger sister, human rights activist Sultana Kamal, confirmed the news.
"My elder brother passed away a short while ago. My younger sister will inform everyone about the family's decisions. I am in London," she told bdnews24.com.
Another sister, Saeeda Kamal, said the body would be taken to Takwa Mosque in Dhanmondi.
"The time of the funeral prayer has not yet been finalised. However, discussions are underway to hold it at 1:45 pm after Zuhr prayers on Sunday," she said.
Shahed Kamal began his journalism career in 1957 and served for many years at the state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
He also joined the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Dhaka as a faculty member in 1976 and taught there for many years.
