A significant reshuffle has occurred at the top tier of Bangladesh's tax administration under the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

Offices of 19 tax commissioners across various tax zones and tax appellate regions have been changed. Several officials have been assigned to head key tax zones, while many experienced commissioners who had served in the same regions for a long time have been transferred elsewhere.

The NBR's Tax Administration-1 issued the related notification on Wednesday. The transferred officials are expected to assume their new responsibilities immediately upon joining their new posts.

A senior NBR official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said this reshuffle aims to accelerate revenue collection at the field level and enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency within the tax administration.

By placing capable officers in major tax zones, we hope to maintain a steady flow of revenue and expedite the inclusion of new taxpayers." He added that a significant portion of the country's total revenue comes from Dhaka's tax zones. Consequently, both experienced and dynamic new officers have been posted to important zones in the capital.

Meanwhile, some long-serving officers in Dhaka have been transferred to district and divisional tax zones to ensure a balanced distribution of experience and expertise.

Revenue officials consider the reshuffle important for the sector.

They believe the changes in Dhaka's tax zones will affect both the pace and quality of revenue realization.

Under the leadership of the new commissioners, innovative initiatives may emerge in building relationships with major taxpayers, onboarding new taxpayers, and recovering arrears.

The NBR hopes the reshuffle will help reduce the shortfall in revenue realization for the current fiscal year.
