Md Akhter Hossain appointed as independent director of National Bank

Md Akhter Hossain has been appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of National Bank PLC as Independent Director, under the authority conferred by Sections 45 and 47(3) of the Bank Company Act, 1991. Bangladesh Bank accorded its approval to the appointment on June 24, 2026.

On April 30, 2026, he participated in the 547th meeting of the Board of Directors of National Bank PLC as the newly appointed Independent Director, according to a press release.

Md Akhter Hossain brings over 37 years of distinguished experience in Bangladesh’s banking and financial sector.

He began his career in 1988 as a Senior Officer at Agrani Bank PLC and went on to hold key leadership positions at Mercantile Bank PLC, Shahjalal Islami Bank PLC, and EXIM Bank PLC.

During his career, he served as Managing Director (Interim Charge) of EXIM Bank PLC, and as Additional Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director of Shahjalal Islami Bank PLC. He also served as a Nominated Director of Shahjalal Islami Bank Securities Ltd.

Widely recognised for his leadership and expertise in banking operations, treasury, foreign trade, credit risk management, compliance, and corporate governance, Mr Hossain has played a significant role in strengthening banking policies, regulatory compliance, and institutional growth throughout his career.

Beyond banking, he has contributed to education and professional training, having worked as a lecturer and regularly conducting training programs for banking professionals. He has also served as an Examiner and Moderator for the Institute of Bankers Bangladesh (IBB).

Mr Hossain completed his B.Com (Hons) and M.Com in Accounting from the University of Dhaka. He earned his MBA from the University of Hull, UK, under the Bank of England Scholarship Program, and is an Associate of the Institute of Bankers Bangladesh (AIBB).

He has participated in numerous international training programs, seminars, and conferences across the USA, UK, Germany, Switzerland, China, UAE, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and other countries.
