Dhaka University Vice-chancellor Prof Dr A B M Obaidul Islam has announced a 20-year academic development plan aimed at transforming the university into a world-class institution.

He unveiled the plan, titled "Dhaka University Academic Plan (2026-2046)," during his speech as the Senate chairman at the annual Senate meeting held at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on Monday.

The vice-chancellor said the plan has been designed around the university's 125th anniversary, with the vision of establishing DU as an institution of inclusive innovation and ethical leadership.

He also said implementation of the plan will be carried out in five phases - Ownership Phase (2026-28), Acceleration Phase (2028-33), Transformation Phase (2033-38), Renaissance Phase (2038-43), and Inspiration Phase (2043-46).

"The plan is not merely a policy document; it is a strategic foundation for transforming Dhaka University over the next two decades," Prof Obaidul Islam said.

He said the plan was prepared through extensive research, national and international experiences, and in consultations with teachers, students, alumni, industries and policymakers.

It is based on 11 strategic pillars, including leadership, research and innovation, modernisation of education, entrepreneurship and employment, university-industry-government collaboration, capacity building, resource management, administrative excellence, ethical campus culture, inclusion, and preservation of heritage.

The vice-chancellor said the plan aims to create a university where research will be the central force, education will be future-oriented, administration will be efficient, and innovation and entrepreneurship will become integral parts of the university culture.

Prof Obaidul Islam also expressed his interest in establishing a Tk10billion (Tk1,000 crore) research fund with collective support from Dhaka University alumni.
