Khairul Islam Sajib, son of BNP's Narayanganj-3 lawmaker Azharul Islam Mannan, was released to his family late Sunday after being questioned by police over allegations of extortion.

Sajib was taken into custody from the capital on Sunday afternoon by Narayanganj district police with assistance from the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, according to local media reports. He was later taken to the DB headquarters on Minto Road for questioning.

Police said Sajib was released after signing a bond, while the allegations against him are being verified.

According to media reports, Sajib faces accusations of demanding extortion money from several industrial establishments, including allegedly stopping vehicles belonging to a major industrial group and demanding money. He has also been accused of extorting money from goods-laden trucks and attempting to control the local jhut (textile waste) trade.

Sajib was the senior joint convener of the Narayanganj district unit of Jubo Dal. Following his detention, the organisation expelled him, citing specific allegations of involvement in various irregularities.
