CHATTOGRAM: Patenga Container Terminal (PCT), a key terminal of Chittagong seaport, is getting four Quay Gantry Cranes. The Cranes reached the Chittagong seaport On Friday.
MV Lan Hai Hong Yun loaded with the four ship-to-shore Quay Gantry Cranes procured from China for about 30 million US dollars berthed at the Chittagong port at 6:00 pm.
Unloading of the Quay Gantry Cranes will start today (Saturday). The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has taken all necessary steps to unload the Quay Gantry Cranes at the PCT, concerned sources said.
Officials said that during unloading of the Quay Gantry Cranes from the special vessel Lan Hai Hong Yun, all coastal vessel, tankers, fishing boats, trawlers and lighterage ships were directed to exercise the highest degree of caution in navigating the channel. The CPA also issued a notice in this connection to the concerned authorities.
The PCT is a key facility of Chittagong Port, which handles the vast majority of Bangladesh's containerized trade. Improvement in terminal operations is widely seen as critical for sustaining export growth, particularly for readymade garments and other manufacturing sectors.
Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT), a company of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), launched operations at the PCT in June 2024 after signing a concession agreement in December 2023. Initially, the terminal was limited to handling export containers, as it lacked the mandatory scanner required for import cargo.
In May 2025, RSGT installed a scanner using its own funds at a cost of around $3 million. Import container handling began the same month, significantly boosting container volumes.
The RSGT handled 154,564 TEUs of containers at the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) in 2025, operating a total of 78 vessels during the year. The volume, however, remained less than half the terminal's annual capacity of around 450,000 TEUs.
