Bangladesh maintains a robust and multifaceted relationship with the United States of America (USA), encompassing diplomatic, economic, cultural and numerous other dimensions.

The cooperation between the two nations has reached remarkable heights, where education, trade, and mutual assistance are the pillars of that enduring partnership.

For decades, the USA has remained one of Bangladesh's most significant strategic partners, a relationship that has grown stronger over time.

The governments of both countries are actively working to deepen this relationship by identifying new avenues of cooperation and formulating progressive amendments for both nations.

The new immigrant visa policy for Bangladeshi citizens, under which the US government will complete visa processing within 2 working days, is an example of that endeavour, which began on 1st June of this year. This policy is expected to reduce visa-processing delays, thereby facilitating economic, educational, and other cooperative engagements more effectively and efficiently.

According to the Pew Research Centre (American Think Tank), from 2021 to 2023, 2 lakh 70 thousand people in the USA identified as Bangladeshis. The number was 40 thousand in 2000. It indicates an increase of 2 lakh 30 thousand Bangladeshi immigrants over two decades, representing a remarkable growth rate of nearly 569 per cent.

The study also shows that around 1 lakh 15 thousand immigrants from Bangladesh live in New York, which is 44 per cent of the total Bangladeshi immigrants in that country.

Other notable concentrations include Michigan (20,000 residents), California (18,000), Texas (17,000), and New Jersey (12,000). Beyond those major states, Bangladeshi communities are also dispersed across other parts of the USA.

Bangladeshi applicants for an immigrant visa to the USA must undergo a comprehensive evaluation process, including the submission of all essential documents, a medical report, security clearance, interviews, and other formalities.

Sometimes, after completing those stages, an applicant may have to wait for prolonged periods before receiving final approval.

As a result, it may create obstacles for individuals who require an urgent visa to the USA, particularly under family-sponsored or employment-based visa categories.

As the new immigrant visa policy will require only two working days for processing, the initiative is likely to eliminate bureaucratic impediments faced by visa seekers, thereby streamlining bilateral cooperation, making it more accessible, and making it more effective.

Individuals travelling for business or employment purposes are expected to benefit directly from the expedited process, which may contribute positively to the economic dynamism of both countries.

As the USA places considerable emphasis on democratic values and freedom of speech, activists and professionals working in these spheres may also experience enhanced opportunities for collaboration, owing to improved cross-border mobility and engagement. Such developments may strengthen democratic practices in both countries, thereby helping ensure equality for all people in society.

Imtiaz Mirza is a Political Analyst and Social Activist. He said, "Bangladesh shares a long-standing trade relationship with the USA, which has proven mutually beneficial for both countries. Business leaders and policymakers frequently meet to discuss economic and commercial matters. The newly introduced immigrant visa of the USA will facilitate this engagement more conveniently, as the visa processing time is reduced to only two working days."

He expressed his hope that the US policymakers will expand this goodwill gesture toward a comprehensive trade deal.

Also, it may enhance the relationship between the two countries in education and talent sourcing, thereby aiding the development of human capital.

"A considerable number of Bangladeshi students travel to the USA for higher education, and many of them settle in that country for better livelihood facilities. The new policy may encourage the youth to avail themselves of such facilities. Besides, it may attract the talented persons back to Bangladesh, enabling the country to utilise their talents effectively, which may represent a significant opportunity for Bangladesh", added Mr Mirza.

The new immigrant visa policy may facilitate family reunification in the USA and increase remittance flows to Bangladesh. Reducing visa backlogs and encouraging legal migration may also be considered gains of this policy.
